The Progressive Alliance sharply condemns the lethal attacks carried out by al Qaeda-linked extremists on the army headquarters and the French Embassy in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, in the morning of Friday, 2 March.

We express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims. Again, terrorist attacks have resulted in the tragic loss of human lives in Burkina Faso. With Friday’s barbaric act being yet another large-scale attack by jihadists on the country since January 2016, we are deeply concerned about the mounting bloodshed due to violent terrorism.

The Progressive Alliance expresses its unwavering support for and solidarity with the People of Burkina Faso and our member party, the People’s Movement for Progress (MPP).

Both on the national as well as on the regional level, Burkina Faso is making an important contribution in the ever so important fight against violent extremists. We as progressive parties know that – besides stepping up security efforts – we can only be successful in addressing the root causes of violent extremism if we achieve democratic progress and social justice for all.

Terrorism is a global scourge and we as progressive parties, whether in government or in the opposition, are doing everything we can to put an end to the loss of innocent lives. We stand united with our friends and comrades in Burkina Faso!
