Legislating Absolute Power in Nicaragua is an Assault on Freedom

The Progressive Alliance is deeply alarmed by the recent approval by the Nicaraguan Parliament of constitutional reforms granting Co-Presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo unchecked control over all branches of government, independent institutions, and the media. If these changes are enacted early next year, they will cement Nicaragua’s descent into authoritarian rule and further isolate the regime internationally.

We have long condemned the systematic dismantling of democratic institutions and violation of human rights under the current regime. We stand resolutely with Nicaragua’s democratic forces, who have endured immense hardship in resisting tyranny. Over 200 political prisoners were forcibly exiled in February 2023, and countless others remain in detention, exile, or under constant persecution. This latest move, manipulating the country’s constitution, intensifies the regime’s campaign of repression and control.

Consolidating power within a single family is not only a further regression for Nicaragua but also a grave threat to regional stability. The current regime’s alliances with authoritarian governments undermine the democratic principles and fundamental freedoms championed by progressive movements throughout the Americas.

The Progressive Alliance closes ranks with sister parties around the world and the international community to strengthen support for the people of Nicaragua as they work toward restoring democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human dignity. Nicaragua will not face this struggle alone.
