Democracy cannot be kidnapped nor imposed by force — It must be built by the people themselves
The Progressive Alliance unequivocally condemns the military attack carried out by the United States against the sovereign state of Venezuela. Violence and coercion do not resolve Venezuela’s political crisis, nor do they advance the legitimate aspirations of its people for democracy, justice, and dignity.
Democratic transformation cannot be imposed externally. Reconciliation within Venezuelan society can only be achieved through the freely expressed will of the people, respect for national sovereignty, and the full exercise of fundamental freedoms. The Progressive Alliance firmly rejects any declaration or attempt by U.S. President Donald Trump to administer or govern Venezuela. Any political transition must be determined by Venezuelans themselves.
At the same time, the Progressive Alliance is clear in its assessment that Venezuela has been governed under an authoritarian system marked by the erosion of democratic institutions and serious violations of human rights. The repression of political opposition, restrictions on civic space, and the denial of fundamental freedoms have caused deep suffering and contributed to the displacement of millions of Venezuelans. These realities, however, can never be used to justify foreign military intervention or violations of international law.
The unilateral attacks carried out in Venezuelan cities and the forced removal of Nicolás Maduro and his spouse from the country are unjustifiable. These actions violate international law, undermine diplomacy, and set a dangerous precedent. They do not strengthen democracy or human rights in Venezuela, in Latin America, or anywhere else.
Intimidation, military pressure, and coercive intervention fuel instability and deepen human suffering, as ordinary people bear the consequences of geopolitical power struggles.
The Progressive Alliance rejects authoritarianism and domination in all their forms, whether exercised by domestic authorities or imposed from abroad. We stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan people in their pursuit of freedom, democracy, sovereignty, and human dignity, and we support a peaceful, democratic transition determined by Venezuelans themselves and grounded in respect for international law.
