Recent developments in Iran indicate a renewed wave of peaceful protests across multiple parts of the country, including in Kurdistan provinces. These demonstrations, which reflect deep public grievances and demands for dignity and rights, have once again been met with repression by state authorities.
As the Progressive Alliance has previously stated, such events are not isolated incidents but part of a sustained pattern of human rights violations by the Islamic Republic of Iran. This pattern includes arbitrary detention, torture and ill-treatment, denial of due process, and the systematic suppression of political opposition. Communities in Kurdistan provinces continue to be disproportionately affected by these practices.
The Progressive Alliance condemns the renewed crackdown on peaceful protesters, in which security forces have reportedly used lethal force, carried out arbitrary arrests, and sought to silence public dissent. Reports from human rights organizations and civil society indicate that protesters have been killed, injured, and detained for exercising their rights to peaceful assembly and expression, including reports by Amnesty International of security forces detaining injured protesters in medical facilities, in violation of international law. The use of live ammunition and mass detentions follows a pattern of repression the Progressive Alliance has consistently condemned.
Violence against peaceful protest cannot be justified. The rights to protest and to participate in public life must be respected. Escalating repression deepens harm, entrenches fear, and further undermines prospects for accountability and democratic change.
The Progressive Alliance urges sustained international attention and pressure to ensure protection for those at risk, accountability for violations, and respect for international human rights obligations.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Iran, including those in Kurdistan provinces, with political prisoners and human rights defenders, and with all those who continue to protest peacefully despite repression. We reaffirm our solidarity with the Women, Life, Freedom movement and with those striving for freedom and equality in Iran.
