Common Security 2022: Olof Palme International Center high-level launch event. 14 June 2021

After a nuclear war, there are no winners, only mutual annihilation. Therefore, one part can´t increase its security through more and heavier powerful weapons. The only true security is Common Security. That was the conclusion of the report presented by a commission led by the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, presented in 1982.

Today, when tensions between the superpowers increase, disarmament agreements are terminated and weapons of mass destruction become increasingly advanced, it is time to raise the concept of Common Security again.

A new global commission has been set up. Next year, 40 years after the Palme Commission, they will present a report for Common Security 2022.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Löfven will introduce Common Security.

Hans Dahlgren, Minister for EU Affairs and active in the secretariat of the Palme Commission will provide insights into the work of the previous Commission.

Six members of the new global high-level advisory commission will discuss the concept and its relevance for today’s challenges:

• Sharan Burrow, Secretary General ITUC

• Kumi Naidoo, Global Ambassador, Africans Rising for Justice, Peace and Dignity

• Saber Chowdhury, Member of Bangladeshi Parliament and Honorary President of Inter-Parliamentary Union

• Sean Conner, Assistant Coordinator International Peace Bureau

• Anna Fendley, Chair of the ITUC Youth Committee

• Rosaline Marbinah, OSCE Special Representative Youth and Security

Moderator: Anna Sundström, Secretary General Olof Palme International Center.
