Together for a Just and Lasting Peace: Progressive Alliance Stands With Ukraine Against Russian Aggression

On February 24, as we observed the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the Progressive Alliance renews its condemnation of autocracy and imperialist ambitions. We first spoke out in February 2022, when we unequivocally condemned Russia’s unprovoked attack. Our commitment to Ukraine remains unshaken. The ongoing aggression has caused immense suffering—tens of thousands dead or wounded, including women, children, the elderly, and other vulnerable communities—and has undermined democracies far beyond Ukraine’s borders.
Ukraine Must Be at the Table
We categorically reject any negotiations that sideline Ukraine and Europe. Talks conducted “over Ukraine’s head”—whether in Riyadh or elsewhere—risk unmeasured concessions to the aggressor, undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and autonomy, and endanger global security. A truly just and lasting peace must be determined first and foremost by the people of Ukraine, whose bravery and resilience inspire all who stand against oppression. The future of Europe’s security can only be discussed with Europe.
Exposing Disinformation, Demanding Accountability
Recent attempts to blame Ukraine for an unwillingness to end the war, or to belittle an independent state, are blatant falsehoods that undermine international law. By launching this full-scale invasion in 2022—following its illegal annexation of Crimea and invasion of Donbas in 2014—Russia is the aggressor, committing serious violations of the fundamental principles that safeguard state sovereignty and protect civilians. We insist on full accountability for war crimes: the actions of the International Criminal Court, the mandates of the UN Charter, and the core principles enshrined in the Geneva Conventions must be upheld. Failure to enforce justice will only embolden future acts of aggression and fuel irredentist claims elsewhere in the world.
Rejecting Authoritarian Exploitation and Safeguarding Global Security
The war has exposed the threat of rising authoritarianism, extremist populism, and foreign meddling in democracies worldwide. We denounce any “quick fix” deal that ignores Ukraine’s security needs or paves the way for exploitative economic and dangerous geopolitical arrangements. What happens in Ukraine will set the standard for how the global community counters imperial threats. Europe and all democratic allies around the world must maintain unity—this includes robust defense, humanitarian aid, and coordinated security assistance.
Our Progressive Commitment to Freedom, Justice, and Lasting Peace
The Progressive Alliance stands resolutely for the principles of freedom, justice and democracy. We call on all like-minded forces to push back against disinformation, uphold human rights, and protect national sovereignty. In solidarity with the Ukrainian people, we declare: No backroom deals, no false peace, and no compromises on sovereignty. Only a comprehensive, just resolution—one that respects Ukraine’s independence and the rule of international law—can lay the groundwork for a more stable, democratic world.
