Stand Against Online and Offline Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Targeting Women in Politics and Activism

As we mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25, the Progressive Alliance reaffirms its unwavering commitment to combating all forms of gender-based violence. This year, we spotlight the unique struggles faced by women in politics and activism, who are disproportionately targeted by violence aimed at silencing their voices and excluding them from public life. 

We stand united against all forms of violence targeting women in public life. From vicious online harassment, including threats and disinformation campaigns, to physical intimidation and attacks, gender-based violence against women in leadership undermines democracy and social progress. It is not only a violation of their rights but an attack on the principles of justice and equality that underpin democratic societies.

This Fight Matters

For women in politics and activism face relentless digital abuse, including hate speech, doxxing, and threats of sexual violence. These online tactics seek to discredit their work and drive them out of public discourse; 

For in all parts of the world, women leaders, journalists, and activists confront physical harassment, threats, and even assassination attempts, intended to erode their resolve and limit their participation in governance; 

For this violence is systemic and political, designed to maintain existing power imbalances and discourage women from stepping into roles of influence and decision-making;

For we can only overcome the structural reasons for gender based violence by transforming the patriarchal structures into gender just legal frameworks. And for that to happen, like minded men and women need to galvanise resources, data, strength, and support in the long journey to see a more equal and safe world for all of us. 

On this important day, the Progressive Alliance reaffirms its commitment to: 

1. Raise Awareness: Highlight the experiences of women in politics and activism, ensuring their struggles and resilience inspire global action. 
2. Advocate for Stronger Protections: Push for comprehensive legal and institutional measures to protect women leaders and hold perpetrators accountable. 
3. Promote Safer Digital Spaces: Support initiatives that regulate digital platforms to combat online harassment while upholding freedom of expression. 
4. Empower Survivors: Champion programs that provide survivors of GBV with the resources and support they need to continue their work safely and effectively. 
5. Uphold Human Rights and International Law: Protect women especially in regions affected by dehumanization, war, occupation, subjugation, and authoritarian rule. In these contexts, women are at heightened risk of violations and violence. 

Without consistent promotion of human rights and the rule of law, democracy cannot exist. We call on political actors to ensure these protections are upheld, as they are the foundation for peace, justice, and equality.

We uphold this day as a day of both resistance to GBV and support for fellow activists and politicians. We must create a global environment where women can lead without fear, contributing fully to the political and social fabric of their communities. 

We urge governments, political parties, civil society, the private sector particularly technology companies to take decisive action against GBV. Ending violence against women in politics and activism is not only about achieving gender equality but is fundamental to the integrity and vitality of our democratic institutions. 

Together, we can and must end gender-based violence. There is no excuse.
